World Communism Team: Season 53 Part II

Written by World Communism Team at 09:57 12/6-2020

This next stretch of season 53 started for the World Communism Team in a training race on Luzon where the team entered Philippines Laoag - Bangued with no other ambition than to build up race shape and team spirit.

Right after this zambia Yoweri Ayesu led the team into the first ever chile Trofeo de Provincia de Talca with a winning ambition, but having an off day, and one of his team mates having an off day as well, favourite zambia Yoweri Ayesu only managed to salvage a more modest 9th place, setting the team back a little bit in its fight to maintain division 6 status ahead of an upcoming objective.

Subsequently, the team moved on to London where a secondary squad led by season surprise tanzania Kuumba Rusesabagina, was to race in Division 6 England Abbey Road Race, another largely flat race where the youngster was not expected to score points by many in attendance. His only notable leadout rider for this race was gambia Sylvain Barry, a partly trained rider with an underwhelming 55 in SP who crashed early in the race and was not even at his best for the finish. However, even without a worthy leadout train, and in a race not matching his hills sprint specialty, the boy from the Tanganyika pulled another ace out of his sleeve and managed to hit the finish line at the iconic pedestrian crossing in 8th position.

Probably sealing the team’s Division 6 status and cementing the elusive qualification for the Cesko-Slovensky Pohar right at the time World Communism Team was going to miss out on it.

On the next day the team was racing in Zambia, in Zambia Chase of the Hippopotami where zambia Yoweri Ayesu assisted by rookie zambia Shaabani Chisiza would attempt to keep up with the cobblers to try for Yoweri to steal a result on home ground in the final sprint. While being an obvious crowd favourite Yoweri Ayesu was only to be considered an unlikely outsider. And while Nigeria Benjamin Fatokun of Nigeria Maramoy who had managed to follow an early attack, surprised the favourites to become the first African winner of this African race, zambia Yoweri Ayesu again managed a 9th place to score some points for south Africa World Communism Team.

Following this the team was involved in a string of practice races in order to pump up race shape and team spirit ahead of the prestigious Cesko-Slovensky Pohar and make the best of this opportunity to measure against the best hillers in the division.

Namely italy Trofeo Partenope, newly established canada Caves and Lifts Crit, and lastly, on our way to the Czech Republic, a stop by the Ukraine at ukraine Stachanov Street Race.

Then came the time for czech republic Ceske Budejovice - Brno the opening and king stage of the europe Cesko-Slovensky Pohar.

The team had done its best to prepare for this, but could not get ethiopia Addis Gebreselassie in top form in time, and having had to race a few extra races to make sure to make the cut in division 6 for the race, the DP of the teammates was a bit lower than desired.

And with Sweden Ronny Hellgren and his top team czech republic PEKAC B tipped to largely dominate the race.

World Communism Team was to be a bit out of its depth and struggle to stick with the head of the race. However there was still hope that with a bit of luck ethiopia Addis Gebreselassie could place well in the first two stages and somehow cling to the top 9 in the GC.

In the first stage the team was surprised by an early attack that Addis Gebreselassie did not join. The peloton could not catch this break and ended up exploding while trying. A few precious places were lost as a result, and the start to the cup was not great with Addis Gebreselassie only finishing at a disappointing 12th place.

Among the big winners of the day was time trialist el Salvador Sergio Bergasa of el Salvador Amazonia who was a favourite for the final TT, but after getting 2nd on stage 1 became a serious candidate for the GC podium. All while Sweden Ronny Hellgren of czech republic PEKAC B easily took the stage win and GC lead.

Stage 2 went a bit better, but again a group of riders attacked early and caught the team off guard, belarus Yury Golubkin of brazil Ella Allez pulled an upset, came in first, and denied Sweden Ronny Hellgren his second stage win as the Swede crossed the line in 2nd.

All while ethiopia Addis Gebreselassie finished 9th and moved up to 8th place in the GC.

There was no hope for ethiopia Addis Gebreselassie to get anything out of the TT so in the last stage he was pushed out of the desired top 9 and got a final 14th place in the GC. As big favourite Sweden Ronny Hellgren of czech republic PEKAC B beat el Salvador Sergio Bergasa of el Salvador Amazonia in the TT, and walked away with another stage win and with the trophy that many expected him to win.

World Communism Team will work on plans to return to the europe Cesko-Slovensky Pohar for the fourth time next season. With a better team enabling a better outcome for the team of the proletariat.

Yes, stage 1 and stage 2 of the cup both had breakaway results. Got the GC challenge completely confused.

Two breakaways in the tour? Wow, Since I don't remember the last time I used that strategy. Only seen it work once so far.
